The idea for this artwork came to me while traveling through Bosnia. I visited numerous villages, and knowing the history of the Bosnian Civil War (1992-1995), I was deeply moved by what I saw. In nearly every village, I encountered monuments honouring and remembering the young men who were taken from their loved ones. Villages that once had populations of 2,000 people are now home to just 500.
In one of these villages, there was once a sports complex featuring a striking brutalist-style high diving board. The weight of history could be felt in that place, which, after all these years, has unfortunately fallen into disrepair.
I want to create an image that captures the sense that time has somehow stood still since this bloody war. A war that may have ended, but is far from forgotten.
